Fetch lands in Commander, explained
Updated
Fetch lands (Windswept Heath, Polluted Delta, etc.) are the single strongest mana-fixing category in Commander — they thin your deck, fix two colors, and enable shock lands. Every 3+ color deck at $250+ budget should run 4–8. At lower budgets, panorama fetches and Prismatic Vista cover the gap.
Why fetch lands are so good
A fetch land is functionally three cards: it fixes any of two colors, thins a card from your deck (increasing your card quality every draw), and triggers landfall, delve, revolt, and Ravnica shock synergies.
In multiplayer Commander, deck thinning is stronger than in 1v1 formats because you draw more cards per game — every point of card quality compounds.
When they are mandatory
Three or more colors + $250+ budget = run fetches. Every triple-shard, wedge, four-color, and five-color deck wants at least 4 fetches. At $500+ budget, run 6–8.
When to skip
Mono-color decks do not benefit from fetches. Neither do 2-color budget decks under $100 — the $30 per fetch is better spent on shocks, checks, and pain lands.
Life-total-matters decks (Ad Nauseam, Necropotence) get diminishing returns from fetches because the 1-life cost compounds.
Budget alternatives
If fetches are out of budget, these are the closest substitutes:
- ◆Prismatic Vista — fetches a basic of any color, $8-15
- ◆Evolving Wilds / Terramorphic Expanse — comes in tapped but fetches a basic
- ◆Bad River, Rocky Tar Pit, Grasslands (slow fetches) — enters tapped but same effect for $2-4
- ◆Panorama fetches (Bant Panorama, etc.) — enters tapped and taps to fetch a basic
Fetch lands and Landfall
In a landfall deck, a fetch is TWO landfall triggers in one card — the fetch enters, then the shock/basic enters. This turns Omnath, Locus of Rage into a serial 5/5 factory and makes Lotus Cobra math brutal.
Questions & Answers
FAQ
Do I need fetch lands in Commander?
Fetch lands are mandatory in 3+ color decks at $250+ budget. In 2-color decks or under $100 budgets, fetches are a luxury — pain lands, check lands, and Prismatic Vista are cheaper alternatives that cover most of the same fixing.
How many fetch lands should I run in Commander?
For a 3-color deck at $500 budget, run 4-6 fetches. For 4-5 colors, run 6-8. For 2-color, run 2-4. Beyond 8 fetches, you have diminishing returns since you already thin the deck enough.
What is the best budget fetch land?
Prismatic Vista ($8-15) is the best budget fetch — it grabs any basic and is one card, one slot. Below that, panorama fetches from Alara and slow fetches from Onslaught cost $2-4 and enter tapped, but still fix colors.
